How to Ask for a Better Answer
A good request gives an AI tool context, a clear goal, and the format you want. You do not need to learn a secret language or pay for special “prompt” formulas. Talk to the tool the way you would talk to a capable but inexperienced assistant who just walked into the room: explain what you need, who it is for, and what to leave out.
Explain it simply
When you first use an AI chat tool, it is tempting to type a short command like, “Write a welcome email.” The tool will probably give you something generic and overly formal. That is because it does not know what your business is, who you are welcoming, or what tone you prefer.
The instructions you give an AI tool are called a prompt. Writing a better prompt is just a matter of adding useful details. You want to provide the context (who you are and what the situation is), the goal (what you want the tool to produce), the audience (who will read it), the constraints (what not to do), and the format (how it should look). If the first answer is not quite right, you do not have to start over. You can just reply, “Make it friendlier,” or “Make it shorter.”
What this means for you
You are in charge of the conversation. The AI tool does not know what you want until you tell it. By taking an extra minute to explain your situation and your goals, you will save time and get answers that are actually useful to you. You do not need special technical skills to do this—you just need to communicate clearly.
Try it safely
Take a request you recently made to an AI tool, or think of something you want help with (like planning a weekend trip or writing a polite decline to an invitation). Write a new prompt that includes your context, your goal, your audience, any constraints, and the format you want. Do not include any private personal information, passwords, or financial details. See how much better the answer is when you provide more detail.
Watch out for
Do not assume the tool understands what you meant if you did not say it. AI tools cannot read your mind. Also, remember that even with a perfect prompt, the tool can still make mistakes or invent facts. You must always read the answer carefully and verify any important information before you use it.
Remember this
Talk to an AI tool like a capable assistant who needs clear instructions, not a mind reader.
