What Is an AI Agent?

An AI agent is a system that does more than just answer a question. It can use tools, break a goal into steps, and take actions on your behalf. But it is not a fully autonomous worker. It is an assistant that operates under permissions you set, and you remain responsible for the results.

Explain it simply

When you use a standard AI chat tool, you ask a question, and it gives you an answer. That is the end of the job. If you want to do something with that answer—like send an email, update a spreadsheet, or buy a ticket—you have to do it yourself.

An AI agent connects the AI's ability to process information with the ability to use software tools. You give it a goal, and it figures out the steps to get there. It might search the web, read a document, draft a response, and then use another program to send that response.

Think of it like the difference between asking someone for a recipe and asking someone to cook the meal. The agent is trying to cook the meal. But because it is software, it still makes mistakes. That is why you must control what it is allowed to do.

What this means for you

Agents can save you time by handling repetitive, multi-step tasks. But they require setup and supervision. Start by treating an agent like a brand-new assistant who means well but doesn't know your business yet. Give it small tasks, review its work carefully, and never give it the power to make high-stakes decisions without your approval.

Try it safely

Design a harmless four-step agent job with an approval before any external action.

Write down a task you do often, like sorting a specific type of email or summarizing a weekly report. Break it into four steps. Decide what the agent should read, what it should draft, and where it must stop and wait for your approval. Do not connect any real tools yet—just practice mapping out the workflow and the permission boundaries.

Watch out for

Never give an AI agent unsupervised access to your money, your confidential client data, or your professional reputation. Consequential medical, legal, financial, employment, security, or account-access decisions must explicitly remain under qualified human authority. If an agent is allowed to act without approval, it must be on a task where a mistake costs you nothing but a few minutes to fix.

Remember this

An AI agent is a tool that takes action, but you always set the boundaries and hold the responsibility.
